Outline Stitch
also called Stem Stitch
Blanket Stitch
This is usually done on the edge of something with the 'chained' line running right along the edge. If done so close together that the 'legs' touch, it's called Buttonhole Stitch.
Long & Short Stitch
also called Brick Stitch
Used as a fill stitch in a number of ways, it has alternating long and short stitches in each row which 'checkerboard' together. It can be done sparsely for special effects or packed together for a complete fill. If its alternating rows are worked in successive shades, you can give a natural-looking shading to objects.
Lazy Daisy Stitch
Worked in a circle they're quite obviously flower petals. What other shapes can you make with them?
Basic Satin Stitch
Another fill stitch, this can take practice to get even. When worked over an underlaying row laid at right angle, it's then called Padded Satin Stitch.
French Knot
Make sure you don't go down the same hole you came up. Move over 1 - 3 threads, otherwise they'll just pop through to the back of your work! (Ask me how I know.....)
